(Steve Delaney) Vermont is divided east and west by the Green Mountains, and North and South by U.S. Route 4, which is where Vermont’s waist would be if states had such things. Each of the regions has its own challenges and each has had reason to believe it’s been short-changed by state government.

That feeling is frequently expressed in southwestern Vermont, where distance and geography combine to make it easy for people to feel close to New York and Massachusetts, for culture and for employment. And yet southwestern Vermont has always been strongly represented in the state Legislature. That is especially true now that Walter Freed of Dorset is Speaker of the House, as he has been for the past two years.

Mr. Speaker, welcome to Morning Edition.
