Liam Madden grew up in Vermont and graduated from Bellows Falls High School. Unsure what he wanted to do with his life next, he joined the Marine Corps to find direction. He found that direction but was also faced with a moral dilemma – his opposition to the war in Iraq.

Madden did a 7-month tour of duty in Iraq, and what he saw there fortified his conviction that the war was wrong. When Madden came home he began speaking out as a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War, and that led to an honorable discharge from the Marines – a designation that is now at risk of being revoked.

VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb spoke with Liam Madden as he continues his tour at Marine bases around the country with Iraq Veterans Against the War.
