Last week the Upper Valley Haven homeless shelter for families with children broke ground on a new building…to house single adults without kids. Upper Valley Haven has been providing shelter, food, clothing and educational services for homeless families since 1981, but the numbers of single adult homeless have been growing.

Upper Valley Haven is located in White River Junction and is the only adult shelter within a 25-mile radius. The next closest is across the border in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Liz Verney is Upper Valley Haven’s Development Director.  She spoke with VPR’s Mitch Wertlieb and says the effort to build the new facility for single adult homeless people has been in the works for some time.
