In the mid-1990’s a wave of racially motivated church arsons swept through small towns in the South. One of those towns was Summerton, South Carolina, a place Meg Smith of Charlotte might never have heard of until Vermonters were asked to travel there and help rebuild the burned-out church. Meg Smith and her family were a part of the group that answered that call eight years ago and so began an extraordinary relationship with the people of Summerton that continues to this day. She recently visited our VPR studios and spoke with Mitch Wertlieb about what led to the creation of the non-profit, non-denominational group, Volunteer Vermont.
