The Vermont Senate last Friday became the first state legislative body in the country to support a resolution calling for the impeachment of President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.

The timing of the Senate’s action was a surprise to many political observers because earlier in the week, Senate President Peter Shumlin said he didn’t believe there was time in the remaining weeks of the current session to consider the plan.

Senator Shumlin told VPR’s Bob Kinzel yesterday afternoon that he changed his mind after listening to the arguments of Vermonters who came to the Statehouse last Wednesday to urge the Legislature to act on the impeachment resolution.
