The Putney Fire Department reports a release of what is believed to be chlorine gas into the air at the Putney Paper plant on Friday afternoon. The plant and homes on Putney’s main street have been evacuated, and U.S. Route 5 through Putney and some side roads were closed. Those who were evacuated were taken to the Putney Central School.
