Interview: Quebec faces shortage of doctors

Provincial elections take place in Quebec on Monday. One of the issues Quebecers will take into consideration is a growing shortage of doctors.

The problem isn’t as serious in the large urban regions like Montreal, but in the more rural areas, the shortage is affecting the entire health care system.

And despite the lack of doctors, the montreal Gazette reports the Quebec government is planning to issue fewer permits than the actual number of graduates involved in family medicine next year.

Dr. Serge Dulude is Director of Planning at the Quebec Federation of General Practitioners, and says the numbers are alarming.
