Since no African-American candidate in U.S. history has ever been as close to winning the nation’s highest office as Barack Obama is today, it is perhaps not surprising that his campaign is facing some extraordinary challenges.

Rutgers University Professor and Civil Rights author Steven Lawson will speak about those challenges tonight at Lyndon State College, with a broadcast of the debate that may or may not happen between Obama and John McCain, to follow.

Lawson says the history of black candidates running for office in America shows that even in the 21st Century a candidate like Obama still faces a real uphill battle.
