Faced with a radio landscape driven by narrow playlists and song repetition, many music lovers turn to David Dye and his program, World Café.

A long-time radio host, Dye launched World Café in 1991. Listeners consider the program to be a unique musical oasis, where they can hear an eclectic mix of rock legends and up-and-coming artists.

Dye also interviews a range of artists on the show. Guests have included icons like Joni Mitchell and Tom Waits, and younger musicians like Jack Black and Neko Case.

Dye has collected some of his favorite interviews in a new book, "The Best of World Café.".

VPR’s Neal Charnoff spoke with Dye from the program’s home base, WXPN in Philadelphia.
