Developers are hoping to set up a wood pellet manufacturing operation in a closed furniture factory in Island Pond. It would employee between 15 and 30 people.

The Vermont Pellet Fuel Corporation could produce 40,000 tons of pellets in the first year of operation.

Partner William Powell says the plant could have a potential production of 420,000 tons a year.

Vermont Pellet had considered a site in North Troy, but opted for Island Pond.

The town of Brighton rejected Vermont Pellet’s initial zoning application, because the area was rezoned last year.

Vermont Pellet is appealing. It will also need state permits.
