The Italian government is donating a $2.2 million Vermont-made mobile medical facility to provide medical care for Iraqi children.

The unit was produced by the St. Johnsbury-based Mobile Medical International.

Italian diplomat Dr. Giuseppe Gola says the gift will remember the sacrifices of 19 Italian soldiers killed four years ago in a bomb attack in Iraq.

It’s hoped the unit will be functioning in Iraq by November, the anniversary of the soldiers’ deaths.

The unit is meant to be easily transportable and provides a safe, well-lighted, sterile environment for use by medical personnel in natural emergencies and wartime situations.

Iraqi diplomats were on hand yesterday to accept the gift.
