Retired Sen. Jim Jeffords is being honored for his work helping to preserve a Civil War battlefield site in Virginia where the Green Mountain Boys fought in the 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek.

On Thursday the Civil War Trust held an event in Middletown, Va., where officials marked the protection of a monument to the 8th Vermont Regiment.

The Vermont acquisition was part of a $1 million campaign to save 77 acres at two locations on opposite sides of the former battlefield. Jeffords worked to protect the area before he retired from the Senate in 2007. Jeffords’ daughter Laura participated in Thursday’s event. The 12 acre Vermont monument property is near where the 8th Vermont lost 110 of its 164 men while helping stop a Confederate attack.
