Judge dismisses parental notification item lawsuit

A Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit against the city of South Burlington over a ballot item.

The judge says the city is not required to put a parental notification issue on the May ballot.

A group of residents had collected enough signatures to ask voters if the Legislature should enact parents that would require a parent to be notified if a minor seeks an abortion.

But the city council refused the petition saying the issue was not related to city business.

The petitioners challenged the decision in court. But the judge said the city council had a right to turn down the ballot item.
