Jury selection gets under way today in Rutland for the trial of the man accused in 2006 slaying of University of Vermont senior Michelle Gardner-Quinn.

The trial of 37-year-old Brian Rooney was moved to Rutland from Burlington because of concerns that pre-trial publicity might taint the jury pool.

Rooney’s accused of aggravated murder in the death of Gardner-Quinn, who disappeared while out with friends in downtown Burlington and turned up dead six days later at Huntington Gorge in Richmond.

Jury selection is expected to last into Wednesday, when the trial begins in earnest with opening statements from defense attorney David Sleigh and prosecutors.
