Kayakers are paddling down the Hudson River to mark the 400th anniversaries of the explorations of Samuel de Champlain and Henry Hudson.

More than two dozen kayakers started their 15-day journey on Monday in the Saratoga County town of Moreau.

They’ll be heading south through the Albany area today, tomorrow and Friday.

The event is the ninth annual Great Champlain-Hudson Paddle. This year the downriver journey marks the Champlain and Hudson exploration anniversaries, as well as the 200th anniversary of Robert Fulton’s steamboat voyage between New York City and Albany.

The 200-mile trip will end Aug. 17 in Manhattan. Along the way the paddlers will camp in state and local parks and visit heritage and cultural sites.
