Kerr seeks to redefine role of state veterinarian

Vermont’s agriculture commissioner is renewing his efforts to retool the job of state veterinarian. Commissioner Steve Kerr says the department has had trouble filling the veterinarian’s job because the person who holds it currently is required to inspect pet stores and kennels.

He’s hoping for legislation to relieve the veterinarian of those duties so he or she can focus on dairy cows and other large animals. Kerr says his effort is getting renewed attention from lawmakers following reports of a case of mad cow disease in Canada.
