Gov. Peter Shumlin has declared a state of emergency, and Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss is encouraging people to make donations to the local Red Cross to help those affected by the record Lake Champlain flooding.

In a statement, Kiss said the high water has displaced 12 Burlington households, and the number of those needing assistance is expected to rise. The Northern Vermont Chapter of the American Red Cross is helping assist them with shelter, food, clothing and counseling.

Members of the public who would like to donate to the Red Cross can mail or drop off donations to: American Red Cross, 29 Mansfield Avenue, Burlington , VT 05401, or online at http://www.vermontredcross.org.
