Former Vermont Gov. Madeleine Kunin is to receive an award named for former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Kunin, who served as governor from 1985 to 1991, is to receive the 2009 Eleanor Roosevelt Val-Kill Medal award at a ceremony Sunday at the Roosevelt family’s Val-Kill estate in Hyde Park, New York.

Kunin is the first woman in U.S. history to be elected governor three times. She later served as ambassador to Switzerland – her native country – and was deputy education secretary in the Clinton administration.

Past recipients of the award have included Hillary Clinton, Bill Moyers, Queen Noor of Jordan, and Fred Rogers.
