"Northern Borders" is the name of the new movie by Vermont film-maker Jay Craven.

Set in 1956, "Northern Borders" tells the coming-of-age story of a ten-year-old who is sent to live on his grandparents farm in the Northeast Kingdom.

The film marks the fifth time Craven has collaborated with Vermont author Howard Frank Mosher.

Craven says his own Kingdom County Productions inaugurated a partnership with Marlboro College, and brought together a professional crew with film students.

He likened the experience to a community barn-raising, and the film came in at about a quarter of the cost of Craven’s previous films.

Northern Borders premieres in five Vermont towns this week.

VPR’s Neal Charnoff sat down with Jay Craven to talk about the film.
