One Vermont lawmaker is proposing that state government and public schools shift to a four-day work week because of the skyrocketing cost of fuel.
State Senator Vincent Illuzzi, says doing so would cut heating expenses for the state and save workers money on commuting. He floated the idea to the Douglas administration on Monday.
Deputy Secretary of the Agency of Administration, Linda McIntire says a four-day week could pose problems for working parents with children in child care and may require renegotiating bargaining agreements with workers represented by unions.
Also, Vermont schools – by law – must be in session at least 175 days a year, so a four-day week might mean extending the school year into summer.
