Lawmakers consider changes to hospital oversight

At least a half-dozen bills have been introduced in the Vermont Legislature to change the way hospitals govern themselves. Some of the bills also are hoping to change the way the state provides oversight to the hospitals.

The Fletcher Allen Health Care’s expansion project has prompted many of the proposals. The cost of the Burlington hospital’s expansion has grown from an initial $120 million to as much as $375 million. Former executives at the hospital have been accused of lying to hide those costs.

The leader of the House committee that is handling the bills say addressing the issue is a top priority.
