Lawmakers are to get a briefing Wednesday morning about what steps the state can take to cut down on the number of suicides in Vermont.

The Vermont Youth Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Vermont Suicide Prevention Resource and Training Center are expected to brief lawmakers on the fact that all but six of the 130 gunshot deaths in Vermont in the last two years were suicides.

Rep. George Till of Jericho has proposed a bill that would call for a 48-hour waiting period on the purchase of guns at gun shops.

Till says the legislation would allow for a cooling-off period for people who might buy a gun with suicide in mind during a personal crisis.
