Lawyer’s marijuana arrest ignites dustup for legalization advocate

Three dozen Windsor County residents and 11 lawmakers are urging Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell to disregard an order to prosecute serious marijuana cases from Windsor County.

Last week Governor Jim Douglas ordered state law enforcement to refer significant Windsor county marijuana cases to Sorrell’s office or the U.S. attorney after Windsor County State’s Attorney Robert Sand referred the marijuana case of a 61-year-old lawyer to the court diversion program.

Douglas says the lawyer had in her possession two and a half pounds of marijuana and 32 plants, an amount too great for the diversion program.

The letter says it would be a radical departure to usurp the primary prosecutorial responsibilities of Robert Sand, an elected official.
