(Host) Senator Patrick Leahy is applauding the news that President Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. Leahy says it is a clear signal that the world community sees the President’s leadership on foreign affairs as a positive step in helping to resolve difficult international issues.

Leahy says he thinks the Nobel committee is sending an important message by choosing the President for the award:

(Leahy) "I think the Nobel Committee is saying ok we have hope for you there is a promise that America‘s back in and will give the leadership that the rest of the world has always needed. Leadership in democracy leadership in conflict resolution, leadership in the global environment and after less than a year in office it is not based on what he has accomplished but rather what the hope is for America."

(Host) And Leahy says he views the award as an important statement about this country:

(Leahy) "The award is there because they’re saying America is in a position of leading again. We respect America and all of us – Republicans and Democrats – ought to be overjoyed at the fact that the rest of the world is respecting America again."

(Host) Senator Bernie Sanders also said he’s pleased that the President was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize.

In a written statement Sanders said, "Americans should be extremely proud that we now have a president who is restoring respect and admiration for our country around the globe."
