Vermont’s two U.S. Senators were on the losing side yesterday on an amendment calling for the United States to be out of Iraq by next June 30th.

The amendment to the Defense Appropriations Act failed by a vote of 28 to 70, with both Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy and Independent Senator Bernie Sanders among the 28.

The amendment would have called for redeployment from Iraq to begin within 90 days of its enactment, and for it to be completed by next June 30.

President Bush has been saying recently that he thinks the United States will have to maintain a presence in Iraq after he leaves office in January of 2009.
