Senator Patrick Leahy says it’s likely President Bush’s nominee to be the next attorney general will be confirmed.

Attorney General-designate Michael Mukasey told Senate Democrats yesterday exactly what they want to hear: That he’d be willing to say "no” to the White House and review the administration’s eavesdropping and interrogation techniques.

Leahy is the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is holding hearings on Mukasey’s nomination.

Leahy says he wants Mukasey to succeed.

Mukasey is a former federal judge. He has shown an independent streak from Bush administration policy that pleases Democrats and some Republicans who say Bush’s practices violate the civil liberties of terrorism suspects.
