(Host) Senator Patrick Leahy says he got a better sense of the equipment that U.S. soldiers need to fight terrorists during a visit to Afghanistan last week.

Leahy also visited Pakistan and Iraq during the trip.

He says he wanted to learn what the conditions will be when as many as 1,800 Vermont National Guard members are deployed to Afghanistan next year.

(Leahy) "We have armored vehicles, but one of the problems with some of them, they’re very good, but they’re not as good for off-road capability and we are quickly developing an armored off-road vehicle and that’s what we’re going to try to get for them."

(Host) Leahy says he believes the United States has begun to make strides toward stabilizing Afghanistan.

But he says he’s concerned about the political and military situation in Pakistan.
