Elizabeth “Liz” Daley Jeffords, the wife of Vermont’s former Republican-turned independent senator, died today. She was 68.

Jeffords, who twice married former U.S. Senator James Jeffords, suffered a reoccurrence of ovarian cancer and died at the couple’s Shrewsbury home, her family at her side.

Mrs. Jeffords was an unabashed liberal who often chafed during her husband’s long career in Republican politics, even though he was widely recognized as a maverick willing to buck his party’s leaders.

Her husband shocked the Republican Party in 2001 when he left the GOP to become an Independent, briefly giving control of the U.S. Senate to Democrats.
