Loggers oppose maple syrup expansion

The logging industry is upset about a bill that would allow maple sugar makers to expand operations on state land.

Loggers say it will increase the number of trees ruined by sap taps.

Ed Larson of the Vermont Forest Products Association says the trees could otherwise be a source of high-grade lumber that can fetch good prices.

But Forest and Parks Commissioner Jason Gibbs says the change affects only about 700 of the roughly half-million acres of state forest land.
