Dudley Davis, the long-time president of Merchant’s Bank, died on Monday. Davis was president of Merchants Bank from 1968 to 1994. He oversaw a long period of growth for the bank, which has 36 branches and $800 million in assets.

Davis first joined Merchants Bank in 1946 as an assistant cashier and worked his way up to president over the next two decades. He served at that top post for 26 years before retiring.

Last week, the Davis family made a gift in his honor to the University of Vermont. The new student center at his alma mater will bear his name.

Dudley Davis was 83.
