While the loon populations of our neighbors in Maine and New Hampshire have declined in recent years, Vermont’s population is flourishing. That assertion is backed up by numbers from the annual loon count.

Eric Hanson runs the Vermont Loon Recovery project. He’s just finished this year’s count. He met up with VPR’s Jane Lindholm on Nichol’s Lake in the Northeast Kingdom to talk about the region’s loons.

They started by paddling out to the far shore in his canoe to do some maintenance on a manmade loon nesting platform that he had set up.
