In Rutland Mayor Christopher Louras won re-election – beating challenger David Allaire by a little more than 400 votes.

Christopher Louras looked tired but happy last night as he celebrated his victory over challenger David Allaire.   Both men are well known in Rutland and many expected the race to be a close one.

"Clearly I’m relieved. I’m happy with the margin and I believe it’s a real validation of the direction that the city’s going," Louras said.

Louras, who’s been mayor since 2007, says he’s proud of his record and believes the election shows voters agree. While the tone of the campaign got a bit nasty toward the end, Louras says he and Alllaire, the president of the city board of aldermen, will be able to work together.

The 52-year-old mayor says a lot of the long term strategies to fight crime and improving quality of life in the city are just beginning to take shape and he says he’s looking forward to watching them evolve.

"We have a new redevelopment director who is going to be focusing on blight rediation and bringing jobs and tax base back into the city and he’s doing a great job so it’s going to be fun to watch him continue to work and with Chief Baker in place – we’ve got a comprehensive strategy in place – that I expect to bear a lot of fruit that we haven’t had to date," Louras said.

Besides green lighting Louras for another term, voters in Rutland also approved their school and municipal budgets.
