Governor John Lynch says New Hampshire can apply for hundreds of competitive grants as part of the $787 billion federal stimulus package.

Lynch is in Washington for the annual winter meeting of the National Governor’s Association. The governors discussed the package this weekend with President Obama.

Lynch said state officials need time to decide which grants will help New Hampshire without straining future budgets. The state is slated to get about $800 million in federal stimulus aid, including $250 million for Medicaid programs. The rest will fund transit projects, education programs and technology initiatives, as well as tax breaks.

The first round of Medicaid funding is due later this week.
