A Hinesburg man is facing three to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting the same victim as a man whose prison sentence sparked criticism of a Vermont judge.

Thirty-four-year-old Derek Kimball pleaded guilty today in court in Burlington.

Last January Vermont District Court Judge Edward Cashman sentenced a friend of Kimball’s to a 60-day minimum jail term for sexually assaulting the same young girl.

Cashman’s sentence caused a public outcry. After the Corrections Department changed its policy, Cashman increased the sentence of Mark Hulett to a minimum of three years in prison.

Kimbell could be sentenced to three to 50 years in prison. He is due to be sentenced next month.
