Federal prosecutors in Vermont say a Burlington man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for defrauding a federal department by lying about his income to receive rental subsidies.

Robert Goldsmith was ordered on Monday to pay more than $18,000 in restitution.

Court records said that Goldsmith received rental assistance payments from 2007 to 2011 through the Vermont State Housing Authority program funded by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development because he said he had no income.

But the U.S. attorney’s office said from November 2009 through 2011, Goldsmith was employed and receiving a salary.

He pleaded guilty in July and was released on conditions. His conditions of release were revoked in October and he has been detained since then.
