Many lawyers criticize reorganization plan

A plan to reorganize Vermont’s courts, closing them in the two smallest counties, is drawing criticism from many lawyers.

But others say the plan is a reasonable attempt to deal with increasing downward pressure on the judiciary’s $35 million annual budget.

At the Vermont Bar Association’s annual meeting in Fairlee on Friday, much of the discussion focused on a draft plan that would close courts in Grand Isle and Essex Counties.

It would leave one staffer in each county to receive legal papers that are filed but hold trials and other proceedings in neighboring counties.

Some lawyers maintain that closing the courts in the small counties will deny full justice to their residents.
