Marines decide not to proceed with case against Madden

A total victory. That’s how a 22-year-old Bellows Falls, Vermont man describes the U.S. Marine Corps’ decision not to kick him out.

Liam Madden, a member of the Marine individual ready reserves, was threatened with an other-than-honorable discharge after making antiwar comments during a speech and wearing part of his uniform at a protest.

Now the Marines have decided not to proceed with the case, because they say Madden has assured them he won’t violate uniform rules any more.

The Marines also have concluded that Madden’s statements don’t warrant discharge.

Madden wrote an e-mail to the Marines saying he would stop wearing his uniform at protests if the Corps would write a letter saying his statements were neither disloyal nor inaccurate.

So far, he’s heard nothing back.
