(Host) Secretary of State Deb Markowitz says she s seeking another term in office because there are still many projects she wants to work on in the next few years. Markowitz, who is a Democrat, has been elected to two terms as secretary of state.

Markowitz told a gathering of roughly 75 campaign supporters on Tuesday that there have been a number of accomplishments during her four years in office. She says the backlog of cases pending before the state s various licensing boards has been significantly reduced and services to local town government have been increased. Markowitz says she s most proud of a program that allows victims of domestic abuse to use the secretary of state s office as their legal address to prevent stalkers from tracking them down.

Looking to the future, Markowitz says her office faces some important challenges:

(Markowitz) We ll be using computer technology and the Internet to further streamline our services. We re fully ready to offer online registrations as our pilot project showed this year, but first we have to get the Legislature to pass their digital signature bill. It was pending in the last session but wasn t passed and we re again going to be asking that they make the necessary accommodations so that we can accept payment online.

(Host) Republican Michael Bertrand, who is a Montpelier lawyer and assistant clerk of the Vermont House, is challenging Markowitz in the November election.
