The Middlebury College community is reacting to the news that police have pulled the body of a man from below the falls in Otter Creek, the body they believe is missing student Nick Garza.

Police Chief Tom Hanley says remains were found in the river around 8:30 last night as authorities prepared for a large-scale search this weekend.

Middlebury College President Ron Liebowitz said in a statement that he shares his deepest sympathies with Garza’s mother Natalie and that the thought and prayers of the entire community are with her.

Liebowitz also thanked police and search teams for their work.

Natalie Garza was at the scene of the recovery. She later issued a statement saying her son was adored and deeply loved, and Garza said thanks to all for the thousands of letters, emails and prayers.

Police say an autopsy is scheduled for this morning at the chief medical examiner’s office in Burlington.

Liebowitz says the college is planning a gathering in remembrance of the 19-year-old Nick Garza, who went missing in February.
