Middlebury students return from China early

A group of Middlebury College students has left China because of the SARS outbreak there. Spokesman Phil Benoit says the eight students had been studying in northeastern China through an organization called CET.

The students had hoped to stay for the last five weeks of their study abroad program. But as the SARS situation worsened, CET officials decided last week to send the students home. They had concerns about whether the international students could get adequate health care. And they also worried about whether the students would have trouble leaving the country if the epidemic continued to get worse.

Some 110 people have died of severe acute respiratory syndrome in mainland China.
