Good news for Vermonters who heat their homes with the help of federal heating assistance. The federal government is giving the state $2.1 million in extra money for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

The White House announced the release of the money Friday morning, three days after the Senate approved an amendment to add $300 million to the program. The money will be added to the $9.9 million already approved for LIHEAP.

Vermont Senators Patrick Leahy and Jim Jeffords had pushed the administration to release the extra money.
