State police investigators are searching for the source of a fire that killed a Montpelier couple.

One of the victims was a former Vermont state auditor.

Jay Gordon served as auditor in the mid-1960s. He also taught at Norwich University until he retired in 2001.

The 77-year-old Gordon and his 72-year-old wife, Joan, were found dead in the basement after the fire ravaged their split-level home.

Police suspect they died of smoke inhalation but are awaiting autopsy results.

Nine fire departments fought the fire, which was reported just after 10 p.m.

When firefighters arrived three minutes after receiving the 911 call that came from inside the house, the home was fully engulfed in flames.
