Officials are monitoring an ice jam in Montpelier that has caused the Winooski River to rise.

The city has notified the Vermont Department of Emergency Management and nearby businesses of possible flooding.

The ice jam formed on Lower State Street in an area known as Cemetery Curve.

Emergency management officials say the water level has risen steadily for the last 48 hours. The river was at 9.4 feet at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Flood stage is 15 feet.

City officials are trying to determine if anything can be done to break up the ice jam, which is backing up the river.

Officials say the water level is 1.5 feet below the level where basement flooding could occur along the North Branch of the Winooski River.

Residents are advised to pay attention to siren warnings or door-to-door notices if flooding occurs.
