Montpelier schools to open late due to construction

Montpelier schools will open late this year to accommodate construction at the middle school, which is being investigated for possible asbestos contamination.

The start of the school year for all three schools will be Sept. 2, instead of Aug. 28.

School officials hope that construction on the hallway floors of Main Street Middle School will be complete by then. Union Elementary and Montpelier High School will open on Sept. 2, despite any possible further delays at the middle school.

The school was closed on July 28 due to a possible asbestos contamination from work removing asbestos-contaminated tile.

The Department of Health officials and Environmental Protection Agency are investigating.
