A Montpelier landmark famous for decades as a watering hole for lawmakers away from home is closing its doors.

The Thrush Tavern is closing on Sept. 27 after a 36-year run.

The staff of the Thrush says they’ve tried to find ways to keep the restaurant across the street from the Pavilion office building going, but nothing has worked.

During the legislative session lawmakers from both parties mingled at the Thrush.

Montpelier lobbyist Gerry Morris says every Statehouse in America has its equivalent of a Thrush Tavern.

Morris calls the Thrush "our ancillary office."

Montpelier City Manager William Fraser calls the closing of the Thrush "a real shame."
