The number of Vermonters who’ve fallen behind on their mortgage payments rose in the second quarter of the year, to almost four percent.

Nationally, 6.4 percent of homeowners are 30 days or more behind on their payments.

Vermont’s delinquency rate was the ninth lowest in the country.

Also, fewer Vermonters are losing their houses to foreclosure than homeowners around the country. 1.5 percent of Vermont homes are in foreclosure proceedings – compared to a national rate of 2.75 percent.

According to Vermont’s Banking Division, the total number of foreclosures rose nearly 30 percent through August, to 1,100.

But the number of newly filed foreclosures has begun to decline, from a peak in May of 156 to 115 in August.
