(Host) A tragic scene unfolded today at the Essex Elementary School and two nearby homes. Police say two people have died in a series of shooting incidents. Four others were injured. Police say they have a suspect in custody and that he was injured after shooting himself. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims, the injured or the suspect.

VPR’s Lynne McCrea was in Essex.

(McCrea) The first call came from the Essex Elementary School. Upon arriving, police learned that three people had been shot, leaving one dead and two injured. Police also learned that the gunman had stopped first at a nearby residence on Standard Road. The suspect – a male in his twenties – allegedly killed one person there.

After the shooting at the school, Essex Police Chief David Demag says the gunman went to another residence, where he shot and injured one person, and then shot himself.

(Demag) “The suspect has identified himself as the only shooter, he’s secure, and has been transported to the hospital for self inflicted wounds.”

(McCrea) DeMag said the incidents appeared to be related to a domestic issue.

(Demag) “It certainly looks like the suspect knew. Ah, or at least it was initiated based upon a domestic relationship.”

(McCrea) Chief Demag said it appeared there was a connection between the victims at the three locations, but couldn’t give any more detail at this time.

For VPR news, I’m Lynne McCrea.

(Host) Police say they cannot confirm an earlier report that one of the victims was a teacher.
