The Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium holds a unique place in the town of Saint Johnsbury.  VPR listeners recognize it as the home of the Eye on the Sky weather forecasts, but locals know the museum for exhibits of birds and wildlife, an iconic taxidermy of a polar bear, and for the presentations on astronomy and weather phenomena.

The Fairbanks also houses artifacts of Saint Johnsbury’s history, but that’s a role the museum says it can’t continue to play. The Fairbanks has been encouraging the establishment of a new history center that could take over the work of preserving local history.

VPR’s Jane Lindholm met up with executive director Charlie Browne, and history curator Peggy Pearl to learn why the museum is making these changes.
