In New Hampshire, sponsors of a plan to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana are working on changes in hopes of winning the governor’s support.
The plan to drop punishment for possession of up to a quarter-ounce of pot to a small fine already has been approved in the House. But as it heads into the Senate, the sponsors have offered to restrict it to first offenders.
Representatives Jeffrey Fontas and Andrew Edwards believe the change would erase fears that their plan would be a get-out-of-jail-free card for repeat offenders.
They say they just want to give a young person leniency for a single mistake.
