N.H. House votes on school funding amendment

Governor John Lynch is hoping the 34th attempt by New Hampshire lawmakers to pass a school funding amendment will be successful.

The House votes on an amendment today backed by Democratic and Republican leadership.

House Speaker Terie Norelli says 33 amendments on the subject have died since a 1997 landmark school funding decision directed the state to fund an adequate education for public schoolchildren.

The state Senate has voted five times to put amendments on the ballot since 1998, but the House has consistently rejected them.

The latest measure needs 237 votes, three-fifths of the membership, to pass back to the Senate for its review.

The amendment would let New Hampshire lawmakers target money to needier towns as long as all shared in a “meaningful” amount of state aid.
